This four-day training module, organized by the Maarifa Consult, will prepare humanitarian personnel to address the needs of WASH in Crisis. This is a highly participatory course, with group exercises and theory based sessions, providing an overview of managing WASH projects in emergencies, and identifying key issues and key technical skills.
This course provides an introduction to hygiene promotion in emergencies, covering the main methods and approaches, and will provide a good overview of the community engagement aspect of WASH programming. It also covers concepts of public health engineering and environmental health in emergencies, standard equipment used in the field. Practical sessions and demonstrations offer the chance to see and try water, sanitation and hygiene equipment, processes and practices.
The course is suitable for participants from a wide range of backgrounds including Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Managers and Coordinators, from the field or HQ, Engineers and Environmental Health Professionals, emergency response or management specialists with some experience of a major transnational NGO or the UN, emergency desk staff of humanitarian organizations, and government officials working in emergencies zones.
Who is this course for?
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the components of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in emergencies for humanitarian workers. It is ideal if you are already involved or likely to be involved in public health and WASH programming, as a field officer, coordinator and/or decision maker. You are expected to have a base level understanding of WASH issues. The course suits water, environmental and public health engineers, WASH project managers, and public or environmental health specialists involved in emergency responses. It is also suitable for those with technical skills oriented toward large-scale urban systems, who want to adapt their skills to humanitarian emergency work, as well as anyone who has already worked or volunteered in emergency relief and wants to improve or learn new public health engineering skills.

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with a certificate of completion.
